The Hero's Journey

The concept of this painting is drawn from several points of inspiration; my love for the ocean, sailing, butterflies, and, of course, the universal storytelling structure known as The Hero's Journey. Popularized by author Joseph Campbell, the notion of The Hero's Journey, also termed monomyth, captures the cyclical narrative pattern frequently found in myths, religions, and stories historically and universally across cultures.  Various descriptive adaptations of  this narrative framework breaks  The Hero's Journey down into distinct steps, but core concepts remain; a protagonist leaves their everyday life while persisting through their fear of the unknown, undergoing transformative trials while meeting mentors, allies, and enemies, and, finally, is resurrected and permanently changed. My painting, The Hero's Journey, narrates this cyclical adventure; the boat, containing the hero and their companion, the storm, to the left, portraying the transformative trial that compels the hero to venture towards the portal which is conveyed within the butterfly, exhibiting  the hero's journey to the unknown rock formation distant in the background. I incorporated various metaphorical symbols into this painting, the butterfly, most prominently, rising from the ocean, communicates resurrection, the full moon and the meteor, at the top right,  staging the scene for transformation.
